Description Ingredients & Technical Information

Polysorbate 20 is an oily liquid in a class of emulsifier. It is often used in cosmetics to solubulize essential oils into water based products. Sorbitan monolaurate is derived from Lauric acid (coconut and palm oil oil sourced) and connected to a sugar (sorbitol).

Polysorbate 20 is a non-ionic surfactant that acts as a gentle, non irritating emulsifier.

Cosmetic Uses: It is used to emulsify oils in water and can be used in body or room sprays, creams, lotions and other formulations. It is highly recommended for emulsifying essential oils as it preserves the integrity and properties of the oil. Polysorbate 20 is one of the gentlest polysorbate emulsifiers.

To make sprays, start by mixing equal amounts of Polysorbate 20 to essential oils at a 1:1 ratio. Stir until clear. If it is not clear, you can add additional Polysorbate until clear and then add to your water.

Polysorbate 20 is great to use as a solubilizer for body sprays, room, sprays, linen sprays and dispersing bath oils.

Chemical Nature:
It is a fatty acid ester derived from sorbitan monolaurate

The number following the polysorbate is related to the type of fatty acid associated with the polyoxyethylene sorbitan part of the molecule.

Monolaurate is indicated by 20.

Monolaurate is derived form Lauric acid, and is a saturated fatty acid with the structural formula CH3(CH2)10COOH . It is the main acid in coconut oil and in palm kernel oil, and is believed to have antimicrobial properties. It is also found in human milk(5.8% of total fat), cows milk(2.2%), and goat milk(4.5%). It is a white, powdery solid with a faint odor of bay oil or soap.
