In general use, the term "butter" refers to the spreadable dairy product. The word commonly is used to describe pureed vegetable or nut products such as almond butter or fats such as cocoa butter and Shea butter that remain solid at room temperature.
Most butter products will remain solid when refrigerated (40-45 °F). Butters often soften to a spreadable consistency at room temperature (75-85 °F). Butter will melt to a thin more liquid consistency at (90–100 °F)
There are several kinds of natural (vegetable) butter which are
extracted from various plants, trees, roots, or seeds.
They all consist of solid or
semi-solid fat oils (they remain solid at room temperature)
making them excellent emollients, softeners and protecting agents. Be sure to review the unique composition of oils, fatty acids and active ingredients in each butter. They can be quite different, so each butter will have its own unique and different
properties.
Butters are suitable for a variety of skincare applications including lotions, soaps, skin creams and lip balms.
Use them to enhance moisture and to include the properties of unique ingredients in your formulations and products.
Butters are also a wonderful massage oil substitute as they soften upon contact with the body.
