INCI: Calcium Carbonate
Calcium carbonate is a chemical compound with the chemical formula CaCO3. It is a common substance found as rock in all parts of the world, and is the main component of shells of marine organisms, snails, and eggshells. Calcium carbonate is the active ingredient in agricultural lime, and is usually the principal cause of hard water. It is commonly used medicinally as a calcium supplement or as an antacid, but high consumption can be hazardous. This is an exfoliant with absorbent properties, sometimes used to make food and cosmetics whiter. It is also used as a filler in deodorants. It is the prime ingredient in Tums and serves as a gastric antacid and diarrhear medicine. Eggshells are made of 95% calcium carbonate.
Calcium carbonate is not an irritant or an allergen.
Calcium carbonate is excellent in personal care product applications including toothpastes, creams and lotions, cosmetics, powders, condoms, rubber gloves In make up is is used as a pigment,pigment extender and prolonger. In cosmetics it can be used as a whitener and oil absorber.
Since Calcium Carbonate absorbs moisture it is often added to face powders to increase the ability of the makeup to absorb moisture and makes a great absorber in foundations, primers and finishing powders.
Recommended usage: 2-5% of the formula to start.
